About us

Made in Cambodia, for Cambodian shops

Too many shops here make do with a till that can’t take riel, has never heard of KHQR and freezes the moment the internet drops. So we built one around the way shops here actually trade.

The person behind it

Twenty-five years in Cambodian technology, then one till

Mr. Andy SimFounder of BrownPOS · Founder and Creative Director of Angkor Design

6 hotels and resorts The front desk, the restaurants and the bars, from 2009.

Mr. Andy Sim, Kamsan Sim on his papers, has spent his whole working life in Cambodian technology. Every job along the way put him near a counter, or near the people standing at one.

The hotel years are the ones that made BrownPOS. He started at Paradise Angkor Villa, the first hotel he worked for, and went on to Angkor Miracle, Borei Angkor, NagaWorld and Thansur Bokor, then Group Creative Director at Memoire. A resort runs three systems at once: the front desk, the tills in its restaurants and bars, and the booking on its website. By the end of every night the three have to agree. Learning to make them agree is most of what he knows.

BrownPOS is that knowledge, made small enough for one shop. A till that reads Khmer, takes dollars and riel in the same sale, accepts KHQR, and carries on selling when the line drops.

He works between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, in Khmer and in English.

What we believe

Our vision

A market stall should know its numbers as well as any supermarket does.

Knowing your own numbers shouldn’t cost hundreds of dollars a month. It shouldn’t need a perfect internet connection either.

Why we built BrownPOS

Technology every shop can use, and even enjoy

Plenty of shops here still run on a notebook and a calculator, and they run well. BrownPOS is for the day that stops being enough: one till that suits a mart, a café or a restaurant, and that a new cashier picks up quickly.

Tell us what works and what gets in your way. That is where the next version comes from.

We improve together
  1. You tell us what you need
  2. We listen and learn
  3. We improve BrownPOS
  4. Your business grows
How we work

Our mission

Before we build anything, we ask one question: will this help the person at the counter work faster and make fewer mistakes?

  • Khmer comes first

The till reads and prints Khmer properly. It was there in the first version, not added on afterwards.

  • Ready for the day the line drops

Outages are part of life here, so the till keeps selling and sends everything once the internet is back.

  • Your data stays yours

Your data belongs to you, and you can download it at any time.

  • Help from people here

Ask in Khmer or English, and the BrownPOS team in Cambodia answers.

Built on

The technology underneath

BrownPOS is not a template bought and renamed. It is built on the same tools the rest of the industry runs on, and the code is ours — so when something needs fixing, we fix it.

  • PostgreSQLYour sales, stock and customers live here, and every update starts by backing them up.
  • ReactThe screens your staff touch all day, on any device with a browser.
  • TypeScriptEvery line is checked by the compiler before it can ship.
  • Node.jsThe server every till talks to when the line is up.
  • RedisQueues the slow work, so a busy counter never waits for it.
  • Installable appGoes onto your tablet like an app, with no app store and nothing to update by hand.
  • More than 1,500 testsAutomated checks that all have to pass before a change reaches your shop.
